Defining phrases, or labels, like Old Southern White, White English, American Bulldog, Performance American Bulldog is all just sematics. The irony of it is that American Bulldog, and in paticular Performance American Bulldog are the most recent invented labels. I think most knowledgable folks have heard about the whole origin of the term American Bulldog by now; that it was not even a common name for the breed until 1978 when it was changed from the original name American Pit Bulldog that had been applied just eight years earlier in 1970. The labels Old Southern White and White English appear to be much older colloquial names for various strains of southern bulldogs. If modern breeders are labeling their dogs Old Southern White or White English they are actually using the older description. Of course there are breeders who do use it as merely a marketing tool, just as calling a Bull Mastiff in South Africa a Boerbel is a marketing tool IMO. That is why it is so important to go beyond words and look at what the dogs do, and what they are. Because some who label their dogs OSW or WE actually have strains of Modern Johnson, or Modern Johnson hybrids. IMO I would disqualify the Modern Johnson strain as OSW, or WE because of the English Bulldog infusion. Same goes for hound, or bird dog infusions that have happened. IMO when linebred heavy, the proof will be in the pudding, no matter what the ped says.
I have always been interested in Lem Miller's Cowboy and Shunamite dogs, and dogs down from 'em, not because of what he, or others, called 'em, but because of what I saw them do. They were real catchdogs. They got super hip scores. The progeny of them that I saw were super drivey, and super physical, real working dogs. They did not have bowed front legs, and disfunctional brachialsephelic noses. They were real Bulldogs IMO. Who gives a shit what anybody calls 'em. Same for the Boss Hog/Ouija dogs, although I have less experience with that strain.
Just my 2 cents,
Dave
