There are some things I do not know, but they are not known.
For those that do not know, both Walz's Dixie and Applegate's Vader Red were bred by Gerald Miles. It was unequivocally the best breeding Gerald ever did. They were sired by Doc's Pete, and their dam was Landshark. First, let us dispel some myths. There was no dog in their pedigree named "Man O War". Doc's Pete was out of Couterier's Blue Max II. He was an Am Staff/Patrick gamedog cross. Doc's Pete's dam is unknown, but more than likely it was one of Casey's American Bulldogs. He had both some pure Painter dogs, and some early Hybrids. Your guess is as good as mine. Landshark's pedigree is unknown. Landshark is where Vader and Dixie got their hot temperment and drive. None of Gerald's other dogs ever had it. Landshark was more than likely a Mississippi catch weight pit.
IMO both Dixie and Vader had something useful to contribute to the AB genepool. But as in any recipe, the amount is paramount. If a recipe calls for two teaspoons cinnamon, and the cook puts in ten teaspoons cinnamon, of course the end result will disasterous. This is where Master Chefs, and simple grease pit cooks are separated. The Master Chef thinks in terms of flavor amalgamation, were disparate ingredients blend for a congruous and titallating delight of the senses. Whereas, the simple grease pit cook thinks in terms of, "they want cinnamon, I'll give 'em cinnamon", so he can hurry and finish before the game starts. This is essentailly what has become of the the Vader and Dixie blood in the AB genepool.
