I have talked to the people at the OFA and PIN HIP. I will follow their advice. They said check every dog. The more good hips you have in the pedigree, the better chances you will have. Pin told me, that they could assure me that if I got three generations of .30 or better, I would not have hip problems. The problem with this is, that at every outcross, you have to start over. The truth of the mater is, if every one only bred good or better or .45 or better. we will resolve most of the problems with hips. The fact is that most breeders do not check hips, and very few check all hips. I see many breeders breeding .55 or fair or poor. This is why we have the problem. People over look hips because its to costly to put a dog down and start over. Think about it, if over half the breed has bad hips and you are buying a dog from a breeder with 6 dogs, three of those dogs probably have bad or hip dysplasia. So the truth of the mater is, over half of the pups being sold or coming from Bad hipped dogs. This is why the breed is getting worse. We can only turn it around by checking and breeding only good hipped dogs.
