Gary,
I hope that did clear up a few things for ya as far as where I am coming from.
Now...on with this story because my Mama taught me "the devil is the details" and that is why it is so important to follow this story from the beginning. We are at around 1990. The AB is a breed in formation. Yes, that's right, a breed in formation. Just as all strains and bloodlines always are. There is no homeostais, or stactic condition, in this breed. Life is always a fluid situation. This concept is so important to grasp. And around 1990 events occurred that changed the dynamics and course of events in certain strains. I am not going discuss every strain. But the most popular bloodline by far at that point in time was the newly formed Modern Johnson dog, with it's fairly recent introduction of English Bulldog and some sort of Mastiffy blood. Kyle Symmes crossed a modern Johnson dog, Rip N Woody, with several Painter bred females to create what was known as a hybrid. Of course they were only a true hybrid for one generation, but the name stuck with them because the dogs crossed were so diametrically oppossed types. And unfortunately they were both riddled with hip dyplasia. Well, like produces like and we are still seeing the effects of that today. Since that strain is by far and away the most numerically prominient in the "breed" LOL, they are they strain that is primarliy responsible for those OFA statistics of a mid 50% hip dysplasia rate. Sure, there are also dogs from that strain that have good hips as well, and x-raying, or at least evaluationg by some method, catchwork, weight pull, can reduce the incidence of hip dyspalsia, but it will not eliminate it. That is why I singled out dogs descending from Sure-Grip blood. They are in almost all AB pedigrees. I have personally saw dozens of dysplasic dogs from that bloodine. Like I stated before, some of it could be location as I live in Oregon and many have migrated up here from California. I am not inferring that they are the only bloodline drastically affected by Hip Dysplaia. But they are the most prominient.
Well, drastic conditions call for drastic action.
The inbred Johnson's Dick the Bruiser line that Painter and cohorts were working with was also throwing a fairly high incidence of hip dysplasia by the late 1980's. That is because Dick was more than likely some sort of pit cross with another very bully breed and his recessives were surfacing. There were folks very concerned with this situation. First, a dog named Terminator was crossed with Painter females. This union produced some well known, but little untilized dogs, such as Kershner's Sceamer, Lucifer, B####. Terminator was said to be a full brother to Bettes Big Head, who was a mid 70# catch weight pit who was a three time ADBA World Champ at weight pull, and said to be a 2X winner in the box as well. You can go to online peds for ABPTs and veiw his ped. If he were truly the brother of Terminaotr, that would be Terminator's ped as well. It goes back to some old Colby blood. The story is entirely plausible as Terminator came from the same local and era as Big Head. Terminaor ended up in Alaska where he was bred several times to Screaming Eagle females.
To be continued...
Dave
