Although they were esentially good dogs, I was unsatisfied with my first two breedings. I knew I could do better. The image of Tappe's Brutus that I saw in a March 1990 Dog World Magazine still lingered in my head. The scene from "Little Rascals" where Petey (AKA Kershner's Screamer) is running down the street at full gallop called out to me. Why were'nt most ABs like that? I was speaking with Jim Arvigo on the telephone and he happened to mention he had been over to Kershner's place. I was intrigued. I had been told Kershner was out of ABs altogether, and the GABC was defunked. I got contact info from Jim, and spoke to Rod. I listened to all his stories, just as I listened to all the others stories. To be a good story teller, you must first be a good listener. I am a firm believer in experience is the best teacher of all. I acquired a dog from Rod. It was what he said it was. My kids called the dog Pooh Bear. We x-rayed Pooh, and he was an OFA Good prelim. We bred him one time to a dog called Annie Oakley I had got from Larry Koura. I have already wrote how that breeding washed the phenotypical expression of the outcross blood on both sides and threw back to the revitalized Painter blood. That breeding produced Buster OFA prelim Good, PH .26 .30 top 1% of breed. My kids were getting beyond he baby stage and I once again competed with Buster at weight pull. I am also a firm believer a stress test is the best test of all, for virtually anything. I like to see people under stress. Do they fall apart? Do they turn on you? Well, it's the same thing with hips. Buster was a good, but not great weight pull dog. But I pulled him alot and performed exceptionally well on a #4# basis. He placed middle of the pack at an IWPA world Championship being the lightest dog in his weight class. He held up well too. He is right here by my side as I type this at 11 years old. We bred Buster to a Cowboy OFA Excellent/Shunamite OFA Good dog we called Madeline OFA Good prelim. This produced a dog we called Boomerang OFA Good prelim. I have already discussed the orgin of the Cowboy/Shunamite blood tracing back to Mac the Masher and what i consider catch weight pits, so I won't go over all that here and now. Boomerang was an exceptional weight pull dog. His first time on the track pulling a pnuematic tire cart he beat a reiging IWPA International Bronze Medalist. I was going thru some personal problems at the time and I never fully maximized Boomerang's pulling potential. We bred Boomerang to a double bred Cowboy female we called Addie Mae OFA prelim Good (she was out of Josh OFA Excellent and Tabitha OFA Good, Josh was Cowboy OFA Excellent and Shunamite OFA Good, Tabitha was Cowboy OFA Excellent and Kittles Sissy OFA Good). The Boomerang X Addie breeding produced Baby Boomer. I never x-rayed Baby Boomer because I was way short on money after a divorce, he produced .27 .31 PH top 1%, .32 .32 PH top 5%, and .36 .42 PH top 15% when bred to his own aunt Purdy (Buster .26 .30 PH X Madeline OFA Prelim Good). Baby Boomer was one of the truly great pulling dogs in the history of the sport. He was an Two-time IWPA International Silver Medalist pulling the same weight as the winning dog by a two year combined total of less than one second, at a time when the IWPA was the most competitive weight pull organization in the world. He was an APA World Champ, World Record setter at a time when the APA was the most competive weight pull organization in the world. He beat numerous other World Champs in their prime. So, with the exception of Baby Boomer, who was a weight pull great, I have five generations of x-rayed either PH or OFA dogs. Some other dogs we have produced that scored great hip scores, Zabala's Prima, OFA Excellent, Pruiett's Brodie .27 .30 PH top 1%, Sunstars's Simmen PH .22 .36 top 5%,Magnuson's Cruz .39 .41 top 15%. Moreover dogs off our breedings have been outstanding producers of hips as well lie Spooner's Primo PH .23 .33 PH top 5% Primo is off Roxie .30 .48 PH top 25% who is inbred Buster a full sister to Dave Davies Tyke who has had pictures posted of on this board. But, where are the bad hips? Since we bred Pooh I have not saw any. There may be some out here somewhere but I do not know of them. I may produce some in the future, but the incidence is so small as to be neglible for all practical purposes. Selection of the right stock in the very beginning was the secret to the success. Weight pull, OFA & PH were used to monitor the status. The hips were really good with super sound genetics in the beginning, they are really good with super sound genetics now. I did not cure anything, because there was nothing wrong to begin with...
