I pretty much agree with everything said about these dogs not coming over on the Mayflower and all that. I do know for a fact that back in the day, there were men who bred these dogs. In July of 2006, I spoke to a 90 year old lifelong resident of Florida who worked cattle all his life. This gentlemen is mentioned in Lem Miller's book, I believe. I know that Lem knew him and mentioned him and his bulldog in an article. On July 10, 2006 via a phone conversation, I asked this gentleman about where he got his big white bulldog from and he said "there was a fellow down the road a piece who always had quite a few of them and we would all go to him for a puppy or for breeding." It was really dumb of me not to ask him the breeders name and hometown, but I did not. It is too late for me to ask him now as passed away a few years ago. Don't get me wrong, the oldtime breeder in question probably only had a few dogs as most people could not afford to feed a large yard. But it would have been interesting to hear about him. By the way, when this old gentleman was shown a Johnson bulldog, he looked at it and said "nice dog, what is it?". He was not being a wise guy. He honestly did not recognized a Johnson dog as a WEB.
