Kevin answered your question correctly but I'll expand on his answer a little. The power knob, besides being an On/Off switch, increases the disc mode threshold as it's turned clockwise. While it doesn't increase the sensitivity, it gives a somewhat similar effect in that as the knob is turned clockwise it allows deeper targets to give louder responses. It doesn't add depth, but it allows you to hear signals on targets you might not hear with it set to a lower level. With it set on the preset, or lower, position the Goldtrax has modulated audio, shallow targets give a loud response and deep targets give a weaker response. As the knob is turned more clockwise the audio becomes more and more saturated until deep targets give responses as loud, or almost as loud, as shallow targets. Basically, it's what users of some other detectors call "supertuning". It might not help you to have the Power knob set past preset, but for those who have hearing problems, like me, it really helps on deep targets.
