The sun finally poped out, and after reading your post, I had to go try out the other SST Baron I have.
This one needed a bit of tweaking after the last owner got through with it.
Went out to my test garden, (still to cold for me to be detecting, 37deg.). I have a nickel burried at 10", and a quarter at 12" there. Well, to my surprise it hit on the quarter. Not very strong, and it ID'ed it as a $1, but neverless it responded to the 12" coin. I tried pinpointing, and it would get the coin. Funny thing though, I was so surprised it found the coin, I forgot to pay good attention to the depth reading. I think it was around #6 #7 range.
I had to have the sensitivity set at "Pro". It worked on all 3 tone positions, and it would still respond to the coin with full discrimination.
The nickel didn't respond at all at first. A few tiny grunts, and squeeks. LED's bouncing everywhere. I know the nickel is there, but in real world hunting, one would have never noticed it there. After a lot of sweeps over the nickel, it begin to respond a tad better after exciting the eddy currents, but never good enough to be dig-a-ble.
As you can tell by the depth, my ground is very low mineral content. Neverless the Baron SST is quite inpressive. Did I say I was using the 8" coil ? I also noticed it wasn't as sweep speed sensitive as I expected it to be. Sure, one could over sweep the recovery speed if it were sweep fast, but it wasn't sweep speed dependant.
It would take a bit for me to get used of the multi tone's, but it's not bad.
A very under rated detector
Come on spring time.
