I tried to get to the best part of the site by coming in from the eastern parking area...Guess what? it's at the end of a cul-de-sac that has million dollar homes. There was no designated "trail parking" area, and I figured I'd get towed. So I tried walking in from the southern parking area. I went in maybe what seemed like a mile of hilly trails and got to a deep ravine. I called it off because I am not moving very well and was sore.
This morning I went in from the north, it is just half million dollar homes
. Here is the cellar of the house that was abandoned in 1873...I think(read the part on that link about the cemetary, the date info is there.
The big flat rock on the top of the right side is one of the hearth stones in what should be the middle of the home.
Here is the well right in front of the cellar, maybe 15 feet away. Bad winters make a close-by well, a very nice thing. This well is very well built. I normally don't find too many wells at cellars...especially one this old.
Here is the walled-in cemetary site. It's about 1/4 mile from the cellar. If you looked at the link, the pic they use is of this enclosure. I only found a 3/16" or smaller, brass rivet right about where this was taken. A few shell casings too, so I don't think it has been hunted properly.
This was taken from the opposite side of the cemetary. I was sitting on a boundary stone wall and my PH is propped up on a boundary marker. This is pretty darn unusual, I don't recall seeing one on cellar sites before.
Well, I only got in about 3 hrs including walking. This site is strange for finds. I am not finding typical old homesitte stuff, but I was digging a lot of non-ferrous. I saw maybe 3 pieces of dug iron that must have been dug a LONG time ago, but I don't know why they left so many non-ferrous stuff behind. Maybe they just threw the stuff back in thier holes?? I was feeling real sore, tired, and frustrated, but I think I need to go back and figure out where to concentrate. I did not find any stuff like flat buttons, suspender stuff, harness hardware, etc.
I did dig a lot of tiny pieces of a late 20s car in one area only. I think someone junked a car there in the 30s when it was just an abandoned road. No modern trash except GA buttons
in every size they made
