I know you mentioned and allot of truth to what you are saying about people not being able to afford even a substitute...But in this case it may be Platinum.
A friend of mine from Hawaii has found old Platinum jewelry from the beaches, Platinum was used for jewelry back then and will ID in the very low conductive range anywhere from foil to above nickel.
Platinum has dropped allot the past few days, But still up there above gold.
