Just goes to show you cant beat the knowledge found in forums. The switch works first time every time now cleaned up the others and they work ok too.
Great advice! Weight off my mind ten year old switch working like new. 
Thanks JB! now I can get my first days detecting in... BTW anyone know if rechargeables are ok to use? I have access to some 2900 MAh AA's wondered if I should grab them off ebay?
