I showed the penny to a guy who knows a lot more about coins and coin collecting than I do and he said the penny was a broken die strike. He looked at it through a magnifier and pointed out the t and y in liberty were also gone, I hadn't noticed that. In good condition it might bring a couple or five bucks, but being dug and in the shape it's in it's a good conversation piece
