I would like to address several points that you have all contributed here. All good, but some impracticalities from Discovery's standpoint. When we were given a grant for tooling it was a fixed amount and we did the best we could do with the case. An under arm battery holder would be nice for balance, but spendy. Mr Bill will probably not like this, but the e-class was designed with pot/switches to eliminate their expense. You can't just pick up the phone and order a 100 or so. The order has to be for 5000
and when they're $5 a crack (10 years ago) Additionally as George told you, the Motorola
microcontoller has been discontinued. So George would have to write new code for a PIC chip. I would donate my time for new PCB but... as you see...this would not be easy. As far as SST's go those cases came from C-Scope and they were just cleaning up the last of them. IF small enough poteniomters were available at a reasonable price perhaps a Viper type machine could be done. At least with the 2.2V Cointrax chip, personalized settings can be saved. But, you are right most people don't have the patience to deal with all the settings. It is only the people that have familiarized themselves with settings that can take advantage of all the capablities. However the folk at Discovery are discouraged, and they have told me they have no intention of producating these again. Added to all this the foreigh market is now closed to them in Europe with the banning of all solder than has lead in it.
