The closest major battle to where I live was Shiloh, about 120 miles from here and called the battle of Pittsburgh Landing by the Union troops, but it's been off limits since well before I got interested in Civil War relics. A fair size battle took place about 35 miles from here at Brices Crossroad, we hunted there quite a bit about 10 years ago, and a smaller battle at Harrisburg. Harrisburg is inside the city of Tupelo now, which is maybe 30 miles from here, but we found a lot of bullets and a couple of eagle buttons in a huge park on the west side of town. Lots of skirmishes between calvary units, also campsites, but they're hard to locate and just as hard to get permission to hunt. One of the largest Confederate camps in MS was in Tupelo, and a huge Union camp at Eastport but both places have been hunted hard since hand held metal detectors became available and little is left except a stray bullet or button. If not for meeting Bob, a friend who lives in Tupelo, about 10 years ago I doubt I would have got interested in relic hunting. I've always preferred coin and jewelry hunting even though some of the CW relics, like the MS plate the newbie found or an oval CS plate like the one in the photo that Bob found in his aunt's yard, are worth a bunch of money.
