I haven't noticed any difference at all with the GND/SALT switch set at either position but keep it set to GND. As far as the knob that sets the tones, I keep my Cointrax set like in the photo. On coins, that setting gives a high tone-low tone mix on nickels and tabs and a high tone on zincs and higher coins. I have three Barons, Cointrax, Goldtrax and A&S Special, and to get the tone break set the same on all three each has to be set to different positions so you'll have to experiment to find the setting you prefer
