Yesterday I rode up to the Park and Rec equipment building to talk to Benny, one of the P&R guys. No one was there so I got the A&S with the small coil out and made a few swings with it in the graveled area where they park. I found a few pennies right off and then got a really strange signal. The closest I can come to describing the signal the A&S gave in disc mode is that it started with a weak, odd sounding high tone that turned into kind of a mixed tone gurgle. Pinpoint nulled, then gave what I can best describe as an abrupt sounding screech as the coil was moved away. A couple of inches down I found what gave the signal, but except for some discoloration on one end it looked just like the other gravel. Checked it with the Golden and it just made popping sounds in disc mode and nulled in all metal mode. The Coinhustler also nulled on it. When I got home I cleaned the rock a little and noticed it looked kind of rusty on the discolored end. I broke that part of the rock off and there was a small, odd shaped piece of some kind of black metal embedded in it.
After I broke that part off the rest of the rock nulls in all metal mode on all my detectors, but the part with the tiny metal thing still in it gives a positive signal on all of them. In all metal mode both the Goldtrax and Cointrax, which I have set up basically the same as the Goldtrax, give a positive signal within about an inch and half of the coil then goes to the staccato audio when it's moved farther away, and it won't stick to a magnet which indicates it's in the lower end of the nonferrous range. So it appears I found a hot rock that somehow wound up with a piece of metal imbedded in it, would like to know how that happened. Photo is best I could get of it with my old floppy disc Mavica, penny shows size of rock and the metal thing.
