I really liked the SST, and the guy could be right about it being relatively equal in depth to his other Barons. I was basing my assessment of it on what Roy at Discovery said and my use of it before you walked me through setting the ground balance so it would balance correctly here. As positive as it was before I adjusted the trim pot there's no question it was losing depth, and after I adjusted it to where it would auto balance correctly I only used the 5.5 inch coil. The deepest coins I dug was while using the 5.5 coil, a clad quarter at over 8 inches, a wheat penny between 7 and 8 inches and the Barber dime was a tad over 6 inches down. That's pretty darn good for a small coil. No question the Cointrax is deeper, but I've had more than a few other brands and models that wouldn't go as deep with standard coils as the SST does with the 5.5 coil, including more than one that's praised on the forums for their depth.
