I like to start in AM mode because it seems to pick out non-ferrous near trash better, especially on deeper targets. Items that AM mode find sometimes aren't there when I switch to disc, especially if I'm not centered.
On old sites I'll dig anything non-ferrous also.
Thanks for the picnic area idea. The town's newspaper microfilm is on its way to out local library.
