I've come full circle with my detecting. I got my first detector in 1969, a kit BFO that would go maybe 3 inches deep on large coin, and for the first few years I was happy just to get out and hunt. I was happy to find any kind of coins, and since 99.9 percent of the places to hunt had never had a detector on them the number of coins found was amazing compared to what's found now. Then, as detectors became better and deeper, I began looking for older places and older coins, and for a lot of years if a coin wasn't at least a wheatie I was disappointed. I found a few rings, mostly junk and a few silver, but nothing to brag about until I found a large, expensive gold ring in 1990 or 1991. After finding that ring I became primarily a jewelry hunter. I found a lot of gold and silver jewelry, pounds of junk jewelry and dug truck loads of low conductive trash. Then a friend asked me to go relic hunting with him in the mid 1990's and I found a few bullets.
I still hunted coins and jewelry occasionally but wasn't really happy unless I was in the woods somewhere hunting relics. My 7 days a week work schedule pretty well put a stop to relic hunting and I began hunting coins and jewelry again in the afternoons after work. I retired at the end 2007 but my wife has had medical problems that has kept me close to home so I've been mostly hunting newer coins and jewelry around the ballfields and schools here in town. Now I'm pretty much the way I was when I first started detecting in that I enjoy just getting out and finding just about anything. I get a kick from hunting places like the gravel parking lot, and especially finding something at a place someone tells me they cleaned it out. Much like Jbird and his field of dreams at the place where the music festivals are held every year, I've reached a point where detecting is more about just enjoying getting out and hunting than about what's found.
