It hit me a few minutes ago why so many coins were in that area, at least it's the only logical explanation I can come up with. Until a few years ago there were a lot of adult league softball tournaments played on that field, I played in a lot of them as far back as the late 1960's. The fence around the parking area, concession stand and other buildings are relatively new, only three or four years old, and until a few years ago there were several softball tournaments played on that field every year in addition to the high school baseball games. The people who sponsored the softball tournaments would set a tent up in that area to sell cokes and snacks, so would the school when a high school baseball game was played there, so that's probably where the coins came from even though that was an unusually large number of pennies from a concession stand area, but the nickels, dimes and quarters, and most of the pennies, are old enough to have been lost when the softball tournaments were still being played there. Now it's used as a parking area for the high school baseball team members and coaches, and also for parking for home football games. Probably not any coins left there now even though I left a lot of coin range signals. The two park and rec guys I told about the place probably cleaned them up after they got off work this afternoon.
