I do allot of hiking when searching for lost settlements or structures, And at times it can wear me down swinging a coil covering mile after mile of rough terrain listening for iron signals. Recently, Put together a neat setup using the smaller 5.5" Baron coil and a hip-mounted Goldtrax setup. I chose the Goldtrax module because it has an all metal staccato feature for ferrous and a clean zip zip audio signal for non-ferrous and it can handle tough soil. What I was looking for was the ability of covering ground at a fast pace yet listen to what the ground was saying, So a visual target ID was not the answer but a detector capable of alerting me through audio when ferrous or non-ferrous was present was the detector needed. Using a wooden broom handle, Foam for the handle, Tape and placing the 5.5" coil about 1/2" inch from the tip turned this broom handle into a hiking cane yet pickup the ferrous and non-ferrous signals. Tested it last week and it works great, Hiked on an old early 1800-1870 trail and picked up both ferrous and non-ferrous signals with the greatest of ease. Covered ground as fast as I could walk, It's a great setup for research purposes which I will surely be using here in the fall when it cools down and the gound isn't so hard to dig. Paul (Ca)
