Here's a bit of good news, Most likely the votage on the GMT 1650 is too low to operate the GB. Even though it turns on, has good volume and seems to be working ok the GB quits working after the voltage drops below a certain level.
One day, My King Cobra did the same as yours did and sure enought it was operating with too low a voltage. Replaced the batteries and the GB sprung back to life, Check it out and I bet that's the problem.
