Altough it is my understanding that these controls should have no effect on a Cointrax II-equipped Baron, it definitely does on mine. A mid-conductivity target such as a tungsten ring will sing low-high with the G-S switch set to the right and high tone only when set left. Apparently it shits the HW disc level downward.
The Audio range knob does increase the distance at which a signal is picked up, especially off the coil edge. Swing near a metal post and see how close you can get at full CW and full CCW to see what I mean. It's almost like shrinking the coil. I seem to find more coins amongst trash at full CCW albeit at the expense of some depth. I'll have to play with it more to be sure though.
