Paul and I made a deal on his Viper and I bought it from him. Something about the notch and tone settings are screwed up as the Disc/ID knob has to be set to a little different position each time notch is turned off and on to get the same results, but that's no big deal. With the notch set to just accept nickels on the low end and zincs on the high end, nickels, the newer style two hole tabs, zincs and aluminum bottlecaps give a low tone. Copper pennies sometimes give a mixed high low tone, depending on how deep they are and/or where the pointer on the notch knob is set, and sometimes a high tone. Dimes and quarters give a high tone. The Disc/ID knob has to be turned in a different direction than the one on the A&S to set the low end of the notch, and on the high end the notch can be set to reject dimes.
The Viper seems to be a little hotter than the A&S. It will air test a nickel further, and unlike the A&S which will run smooth with the Power/Sensitivity knob set to the maximum setting the Viper chatters, falses and picks up stuff off the side of the coil farther than the A&S when both are set at maximum. It also gives a louder signal on deeper coins than the A&S with the Sensitivity set as close to the same setting as I can get. As I said below, I can understand why Paul was frustrated with it as it's as squirrelly as a one eyed squirrel on steroids, but I think I'm gonna use it like it is until it quits, which hopefully will be awhile. So far I've only used it at the football stadium, mostly in the grassy area between the bleachers and fence on the home side for maybe three and a half hours total time, and found a little over $11 in new coins but gonna give it a try at an old homesite or two the first chance I get.
