The fact they read upscale on deep targets is the reason I switched from Fisher CZ's, which read downscale on deep stuff, to the Barons. I think that's a great feature. I've dug some deeper coins that I wouldn't have dug with the CZ's or any other detector that reads downscale, but unlike the other detecters I've used that read upscale the Barons don't seem to read upscale on deep iron. An example. Not too long ago I was hunting an old site with a guy who was using a new Garrett with sizing technology. I was using the A&S/8 inch coil with the tone break set to give low tones on nickels and foil, high/low tone mix on tabs and high tones on zincs and higher coins. I got a mixed tone that pinpointed deep, the guy with the Garrett checked it, punched a few buttons and checked it again and said it was a dime 8 inches deep.
It was actually a .36 round ball for the old cap and ball pistols right at 6 inches down. It gave a low tone on the A&S and ID'd just below nickel on the Garrett after it was dug. I was surprised his detector could see it. A few minutes later he called me over to check a signal his detector was ID'ing as nickel/tab, I had iron reject on and didn't get a signal in disc mode, but it pinpointed in all metal mode. I told him it was iron, he didn't think so and dug a large, fairly deep rusty nail. A few minutes later the same thing happened again with the same results. What made me think of that, and make this post, is that I dug the copper jacketed 9 mm bullet in the photo on one of the clad hunts with Denny I mentioned in the post below. I was using the Viper/5.5 coil and got a weak high tone like deep dimes give, the pinpoint mode just barely got it, that turned out to be the bullet somewhere around 6 inches deep. Out of the ground it gave a low tone on the Viper and ID's as a tab on both the Cointrax and Garrett MH. I realize the lack of mineralization could be a big reason the Barons work so well here, but whatever the reason I still wouldn't trade them for any other detectors out there. Even the new "LTD's" that are getting sky high hype on some other forums
