A&S finds a little history.....

This afternoon Denny and I hunted where an old boarding house for railroad workers was located from around 1890 until sometime before the 1950's. I found a room tag from the Gordon House Hotel. The Gordon House Hotel was in Aberdeen, a town about 14 miles from where I found the tag. If they had one the local museum or county historical society would give their left ball for it, so I'll probably give it to one of them. Room tag in top photo, the ruins of the Gordon House Hotel in bottom photo followed by some info about it.
The Gordon House Hotel was built in 1880. It was a "civic" project with money coming from investors. A balcony was added in 1895 across the front of the Gordon House Hotel to the second floor and used as a sitting porch and a sun porch. The first floor--street entrance--was occupied by various stores and businesses, some of whom were cotton samplers, barber shops, grocers, and even the newspaper, The Aberdeen Weekly. It was destroyed by fire on December 24, 1904. It was located on the lot on East Commerce next to the vacant lot that later became the Lann & Carter Hardware three story building.
