Reading JB thinking about closing the site due to lack of hunters....plus me looking at youtube dectecting videos a few nights ago, I decided to try a short hunt late today.
Lack of daylight left, I went 1/8 mile away on a small triangle of land between the train tracks and river, near the old depot. As soon as I got in there, I realized most of the land was too low, and anywhere you dug was washed in sand. I moved closer to the tracks which only gained a few feet in altitude, but maybe there would be dark brown dirt. Plenty of briars and wild grape vines, but got the coil down in a few places.
I got a strange hit near a clump of trees. I had the Prohunter set with iron off and tone break at zincs. The hit was not the same in all directions but did not change a lot with iron accept. So I spun the disc to see where it would go to high tone and it was sort of near 12ga/16ga casings. But it seemed too deep for a shell in such black dirt.
Fully expecting that familiar shape, I was suprised to see a small disc...I really thought it was trash until I picked it up and rubbed it between my thumb and finger. Dang, it sure feels like an IH fatty. No glasses with me so I took it home.
I went to my shop where my son was fixing his truck and had him read it. i told him it should be around 1859 to about 64. It was an 1863, my first fatty.
I did hunt as much as I could, but any more high ground was solid thorns and nasty going. I got to the car a little cut up and saw better terrain on the other side of the road whick is directly across the tracks from the depot. I did not try there in the past because it must have been hunted before as it is only wooded, not brushey. Maybe tomorrow
