Unless you have a lot of problems with hot rocks, balance it neutral like Randy balances his. Balancing slightly positive makes a detector run smoother, cuts down on false signals and rejects rusty iron better, but it results in a slight loss of depth on higher conductive objects compared to a neutral or slightly negative balance. Balancing slightly negative usually adds a little depth, but it also makes a detector noiser and give coin range signals on hot rocks and rusty iron stuff.
