Joe,
What are you trying to do when you ground balance (GB)? If maximum depth is what you want, you might want to read what George Payne had to say on the matter. This will differ with what minimizes false signals. Fortunately, George's explanation will help in understanding where the false signals come from.
Now, with that said, earlier motion detectors were designed somewhat differently than the later ones, so trying to set the GB for max depth isn't going to be what you might think. Manufacturers found it easier to offset the ground balance in the disc mode rather than listen to the complaints.
Oh yeah, power balancing is done on some models because of this offset change. I am not sure Monte designed or came up with the idea first. Anyone who knows the specifics of a design of a particular detector could explain why setting the ground balance other than what is customary works best.
I used to power balance but later decided to modify the detector as a better solution since it allowed the use of the all metal mode easier.
Finally, keep in mind that earlier motion detectors were not designed with the offset in the disc mode so you can't use a one technique fits all mentality and be right all the time.
