JB had a 5.5" coil that went unstable. It was a broken shield inside the cable just where it exits the coil. I was able to open the coil, cut off a few inches and reconnect it. Sealed the coil back with the slurry mixture that Richard Salmon recommended and as far as I know he never had any other problems with it.
There are a few components inside the coil. One or two capacitors as best I can remember but I doubt they failed. They looked to be high quality components and were glued in place so neither they nor their wires could move in any way.
