Caridad's family was friends with my mother's. My parents were living in New York City and I had just been born in early April of 1972. My mother has told me the story of the crash many times and more recently, I learned of Caridad's brother (the late Pedro Hernandez) and that he had been good friends with my mother's first cousin.
Caridad immigrated from Cuba like the rest of my family and had just gotten married. She had been staying in Madrid and my aunt was among those who saw her off for the U.S. where she would start a new life. After the accident, my aunt was also among the same group who visited the Hernandez family to pay their respects.
Ironically, Caridad was to leave in an earlier flight but was persuaded to stay in New York for a couple more days on that sad December. She was just 40 years old.
If there is anyone on this site that knew her, please contact me. The stories of this tragedy have haunted me since I was a child and my family has never forgotten Flight 401 or dear Caridad.
