I am looking for an old book that I read as a child in the 1960's. I don't have the author or name of the book - all I have is the general story line. It was about a young girl who had lost her mother and the father remarried, there was a step-brother to contend with. There was a mystery in the story having to do with a round building that had images of stone ladies that circled it's sides. I think that there was a hidden passageway and tunnels below this kiosk. In the black & white line illustrations the ladies looked like some Gothic knight's statue. The statues were to come to life. I remember some astral event. Something in the story with an event that the stepmother and son were preparing for, something quite sinister. And the phrase "a rose is a rose" and something having to do with "spades" as in either a garden spade or the card suit. The father was oblivious to the peril to come and the daughter was trying to solve the mystery. I read this book when I was in 6th grade and have always remembered it and have had no luck in finding it. Anyone know of it?
