Her adoptive parent's had a young daughter named Megan who had died approimately a year earlier. Years later, when Melanie was older, she meets a police detective and finds out her father is being nvestigated by the police, I think for embezzlement. Her mother is an alcoholic. At the end of the novel we find out that Melanie is really Megan. Her father faked fer death because he found out she wasn't his real daughter.
