I'm trying to get the title to a children's fantasy book I read in the mid-70's. The story, as best I recall it, was about a young girl named Maggie (I think) who lived in a valley which had a single river running through it. The mountains surrounding the valley had some sort of wicked creatures in them, so no one left the valley. For reasons I can't recall, she ended up having to do so. I also recall that before she went on her journey, she spoke to a character called The Earl.
