It was a mills and boon possibly published in that late seventies/early eighties and was part of the love on call series. The heroine is a nurse who gives birth to a baby with spina bifida. her husband rejects the child because it is disabled and because it has black hair and black eyes. he thinks it isn't his. He storms out of the hospital and is hit by a car. The hero is a Dutch doctor who works at the same hospital. His wife dies in childbirth around the same time the heroine gave birth and he is left with a baby daughter. Both babies are kept in the special baby unit and the doctor and nurse become friendly.
The nurse's baby dies and she feels bereft. The doctor suggests a marriage of convenience. The nurse agrees. They set up home together and then the doctor tells her he would like the marriage to be a real one. She is attracted to him and agrees. Sex is a stumbling block at first because she is terrified of falling pregnant again. He also has issues because he has always been a big man and hates the idea of hurting her during sex. His first wife wasn't keen to sleep with him for that reason. They resolve that problem and sleep together. But he wants a child. He believes she is afraid of having another child with spina bifida and substitutes her birth control pills for folic acid. She falls pregnant and after the initial shock confesses that she is half native American and is scared the baby will have black hair and eyes and that he will reject it the way her first husband did. He tells her she is silly and that it won't matter. She gives birth to twins one blonde and one black haired. They live happily ever after. I'd love a title and an author please!
