We beed a 11.2hh welsh a stallion to purebred mares all the time during breeding season here in Australia. We use a wooden pallet with a sheet of ply over the top and then non slip rubber matts over that. It is placed in an area with a gate in front for the mare to lean up against and after a few goes the mares learn to walk in and out with out any trouble or fuss. Many breeders use this method over here.
