Posted by Baraka Caring for full size horses is no problem for me, but I feel that advice is needed in feeding this foal properly. At the present time, and due solely to her condition, she is receiving the following. An equal mixture of 11% sweet feed (from former farm), and 14% Nutrena Senior feed topped with 1 oz Red Cell. She eats 4 pounds of this over a 24 hour period. She also has top quality bermuda hay before her at all times, which she loves. She is also put on grass a few hours a day. The first two days she received electrolites, and is drinking a full bucket of water daily. She is also on a 5 day Panacur program, and will receive ProBio when this is completed. Today is the 4th day that we have had her, and she is already looking better. My concern is that I am feeding the "Arabian" side of her, without knowledge of how the "Pony" side of her may alter her requirements. This program seems to agree with her, but I certainly don't want to do her harm. Can someone please advise me as to the protein requirements for a growing pony/Arab cross would be, and how I should plan to feed her once she is in good flesh? Also advice about her rations, once she is a yearling. This foal is by my Arabian stallion, Ansata El Shahraf. He is bred for a prepotency for beauty, and has bred a few pony mares with excellent results. This filly appears to have taken a lot from him also, as she looks more like a purebred Arabian than a pony or pony cross. The attached photo was taken the day before we brought her home. You have to feel her to get the true picture, as she has a heavy coat. Her spine & croup stick up above her body, and there is no covering on her ribs. She also has zero muscle tone. I do, however, believe she will recover quickly. I just don't want to kill her with kindness. I greatly welcome any advice you can give. Thank you, Link: My Baraka Farm Website

I have been a breeder of purebred Arabians for many years, and have become facinated with the pony/Arab cross. Recently I acquired a lovely filly from this cross, but was shocked when I picked her up. She is 7 months old, 295 lbs, and IMO, quite malnourished, feet have never been trimmed, and has the classic signs of worm infestation.
