At first we did in-hand, with extreme caution, and veterinary exams showed no bruising or injury. But I've found that the mares are happier and more in control if turned out in natural herd situation with the stallion. (NOTE: I NEVER use aggressive stallions for breeding! Nor should anyone else put up with that. Any stallion that "attacks" mares should be gelded, we don't need any of THOSE passing on genes!) My mares always "hang out" buddy style and graze contentedly with the stallions, ignoring the other mares, so it obviously is completely their choice whether a "connection" is made, and they "seek" HIM out repeatedly, even on return visits the next year, so they seem to be quite comfortable with natural copulation. They are always QUITE happy to see their favorite guy. If you are at all worried, I would certainly take precautions, i.e. a tire, or uphill slant, with handler controlling stallion. (if it is an aggressive stallion, DO NOT use him for breeding...a well mannered stallion will still be under control of his handler even when "empassioned"). In all my breedings, no matter what size the stallion I have used, the foals are ALWAYS the same size/height at birth, so, as the scientific research and others have stated, foal size definitely does seem to be determined by dam size. Good luck in your breedings!

I have been breeding both Arabians and Welsh Cobs ranged 14.1hh-15.1hh to my 12-13hh pony mares for several years, and have never had a problem.
