In regards to the Arab/Welara cross, the bottom line is you never really know what you are going to get! It's like opening a present. As far as a broodmare goes,no matter what the breed, I look for a good first impression. Either the animal moves you or it doesn't.If it doesn't..move on! No sense sacrificing all the extras that nonhorsepeople enjoy to support an animal you never really wanted in the first place.
Secondly,I prefer an animal that has already proven itself as a good mother. No matter what the species,a good foundation of nuturing (both human & equine where horses are concerned, is very important)Also, a proven breeder may give you some kind of idea what you might get in a foal. (I said might!)
Third,in a breeding program, ask yourself what your goals are. Are you looking for a hunter prospect,a carriage pony,or an all around mount? Then, narrow your field.
Also in any crossbred program,it is important to keep in mind "hybrid vigor". Simply stated, it's the result of crossing two unrelated animals (ex. a pure Welsh to a pure Arab)and having the product of those two healthier and better than the parents. It is not uncommon for subsequent generations to favor the Arab side or the Welsh side. Keep in mind over all balance in the matings. A full horse sized head(or ears!) on a section A body would be a bit awkward.
I am starting to show on the Welsh circuit, and am seeing so many crossess that I'd like to try, too. (like an "A"/Arab cross mare to a "B" stallion...or an Arab to a Cob mare)
My pony, Harley's Sportster,is a 13.3 hh 50/50 Welara gelding. His dam was an 11.3 hh section A mare named, Meadowlawn Sherri, and his sire was Gamuss (*Aramus x Gazurrette by Gazon) who stood 14.1hh. (Gamuss can be seen on the foundation page) Though Harley is not a conformation animal,he is doing well in performance, which was my goal in breeding him.
Whatever your goals are in breeding, gather as much info as you can, then don't be afraid to listen to your own inner voice and follow your dreams!! Good luck!
