Posted by Jerry Fleming While in roosey roads Earl had a Vw bus that could carry everybody that needed a ride, and it always seemed full. I knew He had a family but never got to know them. Chiefs didn't hang out much with 2nd Class Petty officers out side of duty time. I would very much like to know about His life, any thing You would care to share would be appreciated. Other than work He shared some of His stories about his youth as an orphan and having to get tough to survive the older kids. Happy Thanksgiving,

James,
Thanks for your reply. I haven't looked at the VW4 site for a couple of weeks and there was your response. The Earl (NMI) Payton I knew was a Chief Electricians Mate, and we served together in VW4 from 1968 to 1962. During that time He was one of the finest men I had ever met. He was always willing to help a young sailor learn his duties and support him with kind deeds. If this was your Dad I'm very sorry to learn of his passing. We all have lost a great friend.
Jerry Fleming
