HELLO to all of you VW-4 'CANE HUNTERS. We did have some bumpy rides in that wonderful Connie that had the structural integrity and flexibility to take on the penetrations into a hurricane. I shall never forget my first storm flight...as I sat at a starboard porthole, looking out at the wing tank as it went up and down, down and up...I'm thinking, is it going to break off and this will be the beginning to the end of my life?...I have just turned 22. Just then my crew leader told me that it was my time on the scope...had to watch for any targets on the ocean or in the air that might be in harms way of the storm... I then forgot about that wing tip that was going up and down as this was now my job to help anyone at sea or air to get to a safe refuge during this storm....I trusted my God and my Lt.Cmdr pilot (a mustang) to get all of us back to Rosy Rds. A few more storms later, I was an "old salt" at penetrations of hurricanes.
I am trying to find Johnny Lewis, my chess partner as we flew together and he was a survivor of that inverted flight of a Connie during a hurricane penetration.
