Posted by Kirk Jude As long as those people who work in the community providing the services are payed at a poverty level I can see why the unions will express their concern. Unfortunately their solution is the wrong answer to a problem that must be addressed. People who provide the service for individuals with disabilities deserve a liveable wage.

In Michigan over the last 12 years that has had a Republican Governor and a senate that has largely been held by the same party a lot of institutions have been closed. There will be some advocates that say in this state the resources have not been transfered to the community supports. In fact the governor has made it his commitment to enact tax breaks for individuals and businesses. The state is looking at a 1.8 billion dollar deficit in the next fiscal year. Mental health services are low on most people's priorities. People in the community are being denied services because of the lack of money and it will get worse. I have worked with two Republican legislators who are working hard at providing funding for those who need it to be a part of their community. At the same time I know some Republican legislators that either do not care or who do not have a clue. I do not think the issue of services for people with disabilities has much to do with political parties.
