I have a son with a disability. He uses a power wheelchair and a device to speak and some sighn. He was hit by a pickup truck when he was seven years old.I am a strong beleaver of inclusion. I grew up with a disabulity myself. I have a vishion impairment and hearing impaiment. I remember well what it was like to be segergated away from all of the other kids.We could not even play on the playground with the other kids. Our classroom was down the hall away from everyone eles. Years have passed since then. Yet it seems that nothing has changed. In 1995 when my son became a person with a disability. I begain a new fight to have him included in his neighborhood school. Just like he was before his accedent. As I fought this battle for inclusion for Joseph. That is when I found out that not too much has changed since I was in school. This is very discouraging and disappointing too. I always wonder why something that should be so natural to do have to be such a struggle. Yet I continue the effort towards making inclusion happen in school and community for all children. I work at a Arc. We have a grant with a project called EVERYONE TOGETHER ALL CHILDREN ALL TOGETHER ALL THE TIME. We are a small group of parents who beleave in ful inclusion for their kids. Some of us have inclusion for their child some do not and continue the fight. Others have accomplished obtaining inclushion for their chils yet struggle with their school system to have this continue for their chil without the day to day struggle. This is truly a socal justice issue a cival rights issue. We must never give up and continue to work together towards ful inclusion for our children.
