Posted by Dave Reynolds Our Declaration of Independence mentions the rights to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Can people enjoy any of these rights if their very bodies are intruded upon like this? This seems to me to be an extreme form of doctor/parent/hospital-sanctioned abuse, but abuse just the same -- a grotesque effort to exhibit control over a child because of her disability. You're right. This would not have been allowed if the child did not have a disability, much in the same way that many people who kill a child with disabilities receive reduced sentences or go free for a "mercy killing".
