I had to responsed to this dave and you know why. a year ago after a session ended in 2003, after a bill that had some served language in it that discrimated against people with disabilities and how police department treated people.
a group of self advocates, people first and s.a.i.l. members came together work on a bill call "The Respectful Language" bill. So being from jan. 13, 2004 to March 12, 2004 people work with LEgislators, Sen. Regella and Rep. Kathy Haigh on this bill. Advocates and others testifed on both versions, including of 10 year old girl. HOuse version of this bill made it through both houses in legislation. As we all know that this bill in the Sen. on March 6, 2004 because a contervisoal issues in the sen. all bills that didnt meet the deadline at 5p.m. that day were dead. So the following monday march 9, we all came back and work on this bill, and ready to come back in work 2005.
but march 12, 2004 8p.m. i had heard several that were dead a week ago think of anything of it. i was in the library cafeteria, with a friend. she kept saying your bill was up. i kept saying it was dead and she show me the list of bills that were being heard sure enough yours was on the list. so i called several people to inform them and passed the word on, this included diana who was at a workshop, she kept reading the votes back to them aye aye aye and they started repeating. it was sign in law on march 27, 2004.
for people who doesnt know what this bill does: it says any new bill that comes or revisit bills that comes up during session, that has to do with "people with disabilities," the language be changed to peopele with disabilities, people with mental illness, people with cerbal palsey, people with, not the cripple, not the handicapped.
this includes a omnibudsman that is coming up for a review in 2005, this is example.
i challenged all states and countries to follow in your footsteps from washington state. it may not take three months to pass like it did here, it may take years to get this kind of bill to pass.
so i would be prefered as a person with a disbality, or a person with cerbal palsey.
