I live in LA and am seeking legal representation for disability dsicrimination cases in California, Arizona, and Illinois. I have a service dog who wears a vest clearly marked "service dog" and is certified by Animal Regulation. I also carry a list of laws and a policeman's business card. Yet, as you know, there are many people who refuse to admit that there are service animals besides Seeing Eye Dogs, and they refuse to obey the law. My dog's and my life is a nightmare of discrimination. I have been illegally fired. We have been illegally denied access to housing, transportation, stores, and restaurants. Twice we lived on the street, and once I was raped. Bus drivers refuse to drive unless we get off, and they threaten to call the police. Drivers incite other customers to harass me. One of them kicked my dog, and others laughed and cheered. I fear for my dog's safety. The police usually refuse to enforce the law. One time they defended a woman's supposed right to deny us housing because she didn't want a dog on her new carpeting! They suggested that we move into a homeless shelter! I am on Social Security and cannot afford a private attorney; private attorneys aren't interested, anyway, since my dog is not a Seeing Eye Dog. Charities such as the ACLU and Legal Aid refer me back and forth to each other as though I'm a volleyball and not a human being. Since I am not a lawyer, it is not a good idea for me to represent myself in court. The deadline for filing charges looms, and if I miss, the abuse continues unchecked. Please help.
