I have a postcard photo of a woman with Spina Bifida posted behind my dishes where I see it every time I take out a dinner plate. It is there as a daily reminder to me of the complexities of so many disability issues we face and live. The woman sells the postcard, outside the little booth where she displays herself for a charge of $1.00, at the annual North Carolina State Fair. The display is called "The Smallest Woman in the World". I spoke briefly with her, when I paid to enter her exhibit a couple years ago because I couldn't even believe the exhibit existed. Exploitation is a complex subject. I wish there were unlimited employment opportunities for this person, yet I hesitate to judge her or define or characterize her situation. She is choosing to do this and I assume it is because there are few other options, but I do not know that. She didn't sound like she was interested in any sort of causes or advocacy issues at all.
