The investigating agency, Florida’s Department of Children and Family Services, is charged with investigating and documenting violations of Florida State law. Media headlines, to be more accurate, should have read that investigators were "unable to substantiate any violations of Florida State law in the Schiavo case”.
Granted, DCFS noted that Terri Schiavo was “well cared for at Pinellas Park Hospice”. Granted, these most recent accusations were filed in a last ditch effort to save Terri’s life. The fact is, DCFS reports are confidential, only the conclusions were released to the public, so we may never know all the details. But one thing is clear….
Michael’s authority as guardian to make medical decisions for his disabled wife, such as the refusal to continue rehabilitative therapies (years earlier), the withholding of antibiotics for a urinary tract infection (years earlier), and yes, even the removal of the feeding tube and the withholding of food and water unto death, were all medical treatment decisions he was legally empowered to make under Florida State law.
