Geoff:
Rob made many great points , There are no gaurentee's combinations of brothers with good hip scores IS RELEVENT I believe one of the largest positive is having Zech and Hoss The Boss Blood behind them. Why Zech has always thrown better than himself and you know that so that means since he is such a strong male at throwing himself his offspring could too "If" bred right! I always choose the "Best Pheno Type" not best geno type from that blood.![]()
OLet me use another Example is: I tried hard to get Bulldogs bred to Bugsy of Atomics. Could of been my females or In my respectful opinion Paul was to picky when Bugsy was young and should of taught the Boy what to do by studding him Paul has always been very picky! Bugsy would have been my choice reason why he was the better pheno type over Apollo they were belly brothers. Apollo had better hip scores .25.25 Top 100%.But Bugsy I forget what those scores were. Have them written down somewhere but he was in Top 90th!To me pheno type wise Bugsy was twice the Bulldog Apollo was IMO![]()
Bugsy He was an awesome Pheno type! I was nuts over that Bulldog too! Couldn't wait to go see him when Paul had him ,The pictures of that Bulldog do not do him justice at all.
Apollo was not bred enough. Because John the guy who owned him to me didn't ever really know what he had. Can you imagine the first Bulldog you get and its in the Top 100% with hip scores! Now to some that may not be a Big DEal but to me I have x-rayed lots of Bulldogs and had lots of them crap out on me and when I got Zech that was a mind blowing experience because he not only was tight but he threw tight and awesome Bulldogs! There are Bulldogs that pop up once in a while but then there are Bulldogs like Zech who is an awesome producer and consistent producer of great Bulldogs! Its already proven. Now to me Bugsy it was a down right "sunful thing" Paul didn't collect on Bugsy! He was One of those Greats to me always will be! Paul knows how I feel about that Guy!
Point being made ,Picking pheno type is how I would of made my choice unless "I know how a Bulldogs throws himself or what he throws" using toold such as hip testing etc.Just lately I've seen newbies that don't even know what a Bulldog is "cull dogs" just to make a name for themselves. This bred you never know what people will do its the same with pitbulls people are nasty.hahahaha![]()
![]()
If that same nasty breeder would of had to work for that Bulldog things would of been different you could bet on that one! Getting a stud like Zech that throws Bulldogs of his cailber is an awesome gift shouldn't of gone where that boy did. I know I strugle with this and people don't know what its like getting a stud like him. Okay back to where I started can't help myself, The Stud will either throw himself hard or medium or not at all![]()

! Starting with "High Quality Bulldogs" like you have then you can bring in other pheno traits or geno traits you want with bigger heads ,more muscle mass ,thicker bone structure etc. Your smart enough to have purchased blood your able to use as a sifting tool.Look for the Total Bulldog! The structure , tightest hip,s good temperments ,straight legs ,big ole heads, bone thickness thats pheno type and thats your vision you want. Trial and error is how you will find it.
"IF your foundation is strong and tight!![]()
Then you made a wise choice to begin with. There are no definates with American Bulldogs unfortunately we all know they are a mess!! LOL!! All those factors taken into account and use each factor as a tool looking at the total Bulldog! Mr J kept it real simple breed the best with the best!![]()
![]()
Use pheno type, hip scoes geno type all are needed for the Total package. Rob made some really good things in his post starting with good quality dogs is very impoprtant but knowing in your mind what you want to produce is the vision. Athletic American Bulldog thats ripped up tall ,thick with a monster head and moves like a gazelle I'm not picky to the Style of Head as long as its a Big Head! A Fat Head is really cool!!![]()
I don't want a Big Ole Bulldog that cannot move! But thats just me!

: when breeding for hip scores is it best to just go for the highest scored male or
: female? For instance Stomper and Rosco are brothers with the same ped but Stomper has
: the higher score. But does that mean that Stomper will throw tighter hips.Or similar
: results being that they have the same dogs in their background.I was curious what
: you thought about this because I know that in some instances the huge dog can throw
: smaller dogs were as the smaller brother might throw the big ones.Plus Stomper seems
: to have the bigger head than Rosco and Im wanting to do a Gracie male breeding to
: Sassy sometime in the future. So I guess my question is does higher hip scores in a
: sibling guaranty that the sibling will throw better?I know that there are also other
: things to consider overall but the scores are at the top of my priorities.
