Let just say that I walk into JB-hifi (which is the biggest cd store in Adelaide and the go-to place to buy cd) and there are 5 category of rock music
50/60's section
Rock/Pop
Alternative
Punk
Metal
To me the alternative section is identical genre to the rock/pop section except that the alternative bands were from the 80's onward whilst the rock/pop section were from the 60's/70's (funny enough the rock/pop section has 60's music as well like The beatles and The rolling stones and bob dylan and the who but the 60's section has the kinks and the beach boys and the animals. I wonder how they determine which band goes to the 60's section and which band goes to the pop/rock)
The absurdity is that you have stuff like Radiohead in Alternative but Pink Floyd in the pop/rock section. Bjork and Tori Amos in the alternative section, kate bush in the pop/rock section. Blur in the alternative, Kinks in the 50/60's pop section. Nick Cave in the alternative, The Doors in the pop/rock.
Those group are in the same genre of music but are divided due to time period of where they in rather than the stylistic of the music.
God I hate the word alternative. That word must die.

I also find it amusing that prog rock groups such as King Crimson, Yes, Jethro Tull etc are placed in the pop/rock section.

: Considering that I have seen bands as
: different as Blur, Radiohead, Bjork,
: Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, Gomez, Coldplay,
: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds all bunch
: together as alternative.
:
: The word kinds of lose any meaning. Really
: it just seems to mean a rock band in the
: 90's or a group that is a little bit
: "artsy"
